Effective Altruism

I am interested in questions that focus on impartially improving welfare. I am increasingly focused on research that is important, neglected, and tractable, with a long-term view of the future.

I have taken the Giving What We Can pledge to donate at least 10% of my income to the most effective causes. The best summary of my views on effective altruism is this article I published on the ABC. For longtermism, see my review of What We Owe the Future in The Conversation

You can see a list of my lab’s current and promising research directions here.

EA Activities

  1. A founding member of Ready Research with Zan Saeri, Peter Slattery, and Emily Grundy which created projects including:

    1. What works to increase charitable donations? A meta-review with meta-meta-analysis

    2. Interventions that Influence Animal-Product Consumption: A Meta-Review

    3. Survey of COVID-19 Responses to Understand Behaviour (SCRUB) and derivative papers (e.g., Bradshaw et al., 2021)

  2. Chair of the board at Effective Altruism Australia

Ready Projects

I am interested in both research aligned with the principles above and community engagement that tries to have the biggest marginal impact on the welfare of others. If you are too, let’s get in touch.
